Scam Prevention & Security
How we protect our marketplace and what you need to look out for.
Never Take Negotiations Off-Platform
The number one rule of marketplace security is to keep all communication and payment processing on OnlyEV. If a buyer asks you to text them directly, email them off-site, or accept a cashier's check sent via mail, it is highly likely to be a scam.
How OnlyEV Protects You
- Verified Dealers: Every dealer on our platform goes through a strict identity, financial, and licensing verification process. You can trust that cash offers on OnlyEV come from real dealers.
- Secure Messaging: Our inbox encrypts your contact information. Buyers only see your first name until you explicitly share more.
Common Private Party Scams
If you choose to sell to a private party, watch out for these red flags:
- The "Overpayment" Scam: A buyer sends a check for more than the asking price and asks you to wire back the difference. The original check will eventually bounce.
- Sight-Unseen Buyers: Buyers who claim they are overseas or out of state, cannot inspect the car, and want to send an "agent" to pick it up.
- Fake Escrow Services: Buyers who insist on using their own third-party escrow service, which is actually a fraudulent website they control.
